UNSC Expresses Alarm at Continuing Violence by Armed Groups throughout Africa - Rawan For Media Artistic and Production

The
United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has expressed alarm at
continuing violence by armed groups throughout the African continent,
including Boko Haram and the LRA.

The
UNSC expressed outrage that 27 people were killed by suicide bombers in
Chad over the weekend and at all Boko Haram attacks that have occurred
across the region.

The
US Permanent Representative to the UN, Ms Samantha Power, who is
chairing the UNSC this month, reiterated the importance of sustaining
international support for regional efforts to combat these armed groups,
as well as the importance for national governments to address the root
causes of these threats in a connected manner.

To this end, they called for the holding of the planned joint Summit of
the Heads of State of ECOWAS and ECCAS, without further delay.

The
members noted the increasing political instability caused by
constitutional and elections-related issues throughout the region, and
encouraged the SRSG to continue to work with governments in the region
toward peaceful transitions of power.
This
is so the gains we have seen in the region are not lost, including an
encouragement to focus on inclusive dialogue as a way of getting broad
societal agreement around elections, which have become very polarising
in many countries.

The
members of the Security Council thanked the UNSG Special Envoy, Mr.
Abdalla Bathily for his leadership of the Bangui Forum earlier this
year, and encouraged him to continue working with the transitional
authorities in the Central African Republic to ensure a fast
implementation of the recommendations from the Forum.

The
members of the Council reiterated their demand for all parties inside
and outside of the country to fully implement the Central African
Republic’s sanctions regime and cease all forms of violence and
destabilising activities.
