Three
months after falling pregnant with Ally Louise Smith, Heidi Loughlin
discovered she had breast cancer - and doctors advised her to start
chemotherapy immediately.
But because the treatment would have harmed her baby, Ms Loughlin was given the option to terminate her pregnancy.
Instead, she decided upon a less-effective cancer treatment which would not endanger Ally.
When
doctors discovered the treatment was not working and she would need to
start taking stronger drugs, Ms Loughlin opted to have Ally born by
caesarean section on 11 December.
The
mother, who has two other children, had written on her blog of the
dilemma she had faced - as if she had remained pregnant until New Year's
Eve as had been planned, there would have been a "pretty good chance"
that her window of opportunity for a potential cure would be missed.
Writing on the day Ally was born, Ms Loughlin said she was "absolutely thrilled" her baby had been born safely.
However, in a poem posted to her blog this weekend, she told readers that her baby died on Saturday at eight days old.
In it, she wrote: "The pain in my body and heart and my soul, feels it will consume me and leave me un-whole.
"Your brothers will honour you in all that they do, we forever have three children, not just two.
"I will try to heal for you, and my body unfurl, you'll be always beside me our beautiful girl."
