Vice President Launches Community Security and Stabilization Programme Today - Rawan For Media Artistic and Production
The Community Security and Stabilisation Programme (C2SP) will be implemented in 6 affected states.
The
programme that was piloted last year has galvanised into a solid
movement and expanded into 4 states delivering tangible results in terms
of employment, economic regeneration and stability.
According
to Sudan DDRC Commissioner Lt. Gen. Salah Al-Tayeb Awad, the programme
total cost is about US$15 million, adding that Japan and Spain provided
the finance of Phase One which will cover South Kordofan three states,
Blue Nile, White Nile and Sennar.
He
added that programme will not only disengage people who are
participating in conflicts but also help communities to regenerate their
economies and provide communities with livelihoods, considering that
the programme includes launching agricultural and industrial machineries
plus ploughs and seeds as productive projects to the targeted groups.
The
Ambassador of Japan to Sudan Mr. Hideki Ito said he was pleased to help
the communities rely on their inherited abilities to cope with the
difficulties they are faced with. He believes in the wisdom of every
human being and community and would like to see broad and active
engagement of the community members particularly the youth as a key
element to community development.
Ms.
Marta Ruedas Resident Coordinator of the United Nations marked that the
programme is in line with the national priorities and firmly supports
the objectives set forth in the new Sustainable Development Goals. While
thanking Japan and Spain, she reaffirmed that UNDP and UN system in
Sudan as such will strive towards supporting the efforts of the
government and international partners for development and stability.
The
programme is endowed with an objective to strengthen resilience of
communities that are affected by the conflict or are at higher risk of
being drawn into it by providing: socio-economic infrastructures,
opportunities for alternative livelihoods such as agriculture activities
to at-risk groups, creating an enabling environment for graduated and
voluntary small arms control through sensitization and promoting
cooperation for peaceful co-existence at the borders.
These
projects will create a foundation where peace dividends can be
delivered for stability, reintegration, resiliency and recovery
throughout the 93 targeted communities at the southern states bordering
South Sudan and their adjoining states.
The
social component of the programme is about the capacity development and
raising awareness; agricultural extension service on improved seeds and
agricultural techniques; raising awareness on danger of proliferation
of small arms and light weapon and raising awareness on Gender Based
Violence, HIV/AIDs, and reproductive health.
Communities
basically own the projects and develop resilience in dealing with
displaced people instead of depending upon the relief all the time.
These communities are also gratifying enough to accommodate the
displaced people and the programme aims at supporting the communities in
providing seasonal or temporary employment for these displaced
populations thus progressing from the realm of relief/aid to
development.
Mr.
Selva Ramachandran, Country Director of UNDP mentioned that the
programme of C2SP will be a key to bring stability and development into
the states adjoining South Sudan and he added that the UNDP as lead
agency among UN for development will strive its best to support Sudan on
all development issues in line with Sustainable Development Goals.
Vice
President Hassabo Mohammed Abdul Rahman along with Mr. Hideki Ito the
Ambassador of Japan, SDDRC General Commissioner Salah Al Tayeb Awad, and
Ms. Marta Ruedas the Resident Coordinator of UN, will symbolically hand
over key economic assets such as tractors, water pumps, milling
machines, motor boats, and tricycles to representatives of community
management committees in the presence of officials from the targeted
states.
