Indian Cultural Show in Sudan - Rawan For Media Artistic and Production

The
Embassy of India in Khartoum with the co-operation from the Ministry of
Culture, Republic of Sudan brought a Bhangra Dance troupe from Indian
Council of Cultural Relations (ICCR), New Delhi. Bhangra is the folk
dance from Punjab a state in the North West of India. Punjab, the most
prosperous state in India, is also known as the land of five rivers
namely Beas, Sutlej, Ravi, Chenab and Jhelum.

Bhangra
is a harvest folk dance associated with the harvest ceremonies during
the month of April. The dance is normally performed in an open field
under the light of the full moon. The dancers are accompanied by two or
more singers with a large drum called the Dhol. The words of the simple
melody are taken from the traditional poetry of Punjab. Bhangra is the
most popular and vibrant of the folk dances in India. It is now become
popular globally as you may have seen Bhangra Empire perform in NBA half
time and Cornell Bhangra in Americans have talent.

The
visiting 12 member Bhangra troupe performed in Port Sudan and at the
National Theatre, Omdurman. In Omdurman the Sudanese Minister of State
for Youth and Sports H.E. El Yasa El Sadig was the Chief Guest. There
were representatives from the Ministry of Culture and the Council of
International People’s Friendship. Ambassadors and diplomats from
various countries were present and the rest of the open theatre was full
with members from both Sudanese and Indian communities. The programme
opened with a dance on a patriotic song performed by the Indian Ladies
Club of Khartoum. The coulourful and vibrant musical programme kept the
huge audience of more than 1500 people enthralled with the performances.
Thanks to Indian Ambassador H.E. Amrit Lugun and First Lady Mrs. Asha
Lugun for organizing the Indian Cultural show in Sudan.
