Parliament Passes Cooking Gas Price Increase - Rawan For Media Artistic and Production
An emergency meeting of the National Assembly’s Leading Committee,
called for by the speaker of the National assembly has yesterday
approved the increase of cooking gas prices provided that the National
Assembly is to oversee the delivery of the returns from liberalizing
this commodity to the vulnerable segments of the community.
The
Speaker said he has discussed with the President of the republic the
limits of the Legislature and the Executive and the issue of pricing.
The
meeting of the committee of parliament leadership which is composed of
committees' chairpersons and MPs blocs has convened to discuss the
increase of cooking gas prices increase only hours from the Statement by
President Al Bashir in which he sternly stated that no back off from
increasing gas prices prescribed by the Ministry of Finance.

Speaker, Prof. Ibrahim Ahmed Omer said told the press following the
emergency meeting that during the meeting of the parliament leadership
the statement of the President of not backing off from the gas commodity
liberalization was delivered and basing on that the committee continued
with the meeting and looked into the issues and believed there are
differences and agreement on some issues.
In
a related development the President stressed shortly before heading to
Addis Ababa Friday that the government will not back off from the
increase decided by the Ministry of Finance on gas commodity because the
decision was taken in conformity with the state policy of liberalizing
commodity prices.
