Minerals Ministry Terminates Licenses of Some 60 Mineral Companies - Rawan For Media Artistic and Production
The Minister of Minerals, Dr. Ahmed Mohamed Sadiq Al-Karouri has
disclosed termination of licenses of over 60 companies operating in
mining sector in the context of improving performance and raising
companies gold production and other minerals production reducing the
number of the sector’s companies from 411 down to 351 companies.
He
described while addressing yesterday the workshop of maximizing social
liability of the sector of mining organized by the Sudanese Mineral
Resources Company, the societal responsibility of the companies as a
vital issue.
He
demanded good management of mineral resources and affecting a clear
vision in this regard so that the coming generations may benefit from
the mineral resources.
He
noted that this issue is a big responsibility shouldered by the
Ministers and the companies operating in the sector of mining stressing
that the companies’ social responsibility is an ethical issue before
being a law.
He
demanded integrated roles between the partners in this sector,
represented in the Ministry, The state and the local community.
He
noted that if determining the societal responsibility is left to the
local community there will be a sort of blackmailing and this money will
go to individuals.
He
elaborated that the core issue of societal responsibility is not the
paid up money but the sustainable projects that realize benefit to these
communities therefore the three entities must agree for distancing the
companies from the circle of extortion of persons and groups.
On
his part State Minister at the Ministry of Welfare and social security
Ibrahim Adam the companies and the businessmen to do their role with
regard the societal responsibility along with setting up a road map for
it with the local communities in which these companies are located.
Meanwhile, Al-Karouri affirmed that the Sudanese-Canadian economic relations are important

Minister noted that Sudanese Ariab Company involved in gold mining
refined its gold in a Canadian refinery and also entered in a deal to
market its products with the Canadian side. However, he added that the
two sides were faced with some obstacles due to US economic sanctions on
Sudan.
While
meeting with the Canadian ambassador to Sudan, the minister said his
ministry is working to upgrade the state-owned Ariab mining company,
whose gold copper reserves are estimated at 1300 ton and 170 tonnes
respectively, in addition to 700 tonnes of zinc.
During
the meeting the Sudanese minister was reported to have demanded the
Canadian ambassador encourage Canadian enterprises to involve in
Sudanese minerals investment and industries; besides another request for
Canadian companies to supply other chemicals compounds to be used in
lieu of mercury, which reported to be having health complications on the
side of miners.
The Minister announced certain concessions to Canadian to mine in specific gold squares in the country.
For
his part, the Canadian ambassador demonstrated readiness to communicate
with Canadian companies to operate in Sudan, considering their
technological expertise in this respect.
Canadian
companies are famed for their employment of up-to-date technologies in
the sphere of mining and are currently involved in investment in
different African countries.
The ambassador further hoped to see many companies from his country investing in Sudan in the near future.
